In older homes the drywaller and plaster installer) often did not drywall the space above a stairway ceiling because the stair ceiling created the barrier between the attic and the stairwell. Unfortunately, this creates a huge hole in the attic floor and this space is as cold as your attic during the winter months. It is difficult to properly insulate the inside of these walls and it is wasteful to fll the entire hole with cellulose insulation. The solution is to block the opening between the floor joists with paneling or foam board, and then seal ALL seams wih spray foam.

Excerpted from a full page article on installing exterior foam insulation at: www.greenbuildingadvisor.com A THICK SKIN THAT KEEPS A HOME WARM AND DRY Foam sheathing can be your insulation, air barrier, and drainage plane all rolled into one. Sheathing with foam-board insulation is a great way to get more R-value with a conventionally framed house. It can work just as well in remodeling projects as in new construction. Applying rigid foam takes some getting used to, but the basic tasks are not that much different from installing typical plywood or OSB sheathing—and the lightweight foam is easier on your back… For more information read the full article at: www.greenbuildingadvisor.com
